Choosing hunting scope magnification that works

Had a fellow at a local shop bench a month back, sighting in a 6-24×50 for a whitetail lease he’d never actually walked. Nice glass, expensive turret setup, the whole package. I asked him what his longest realistic shot was going to be. He thought about it for a second and said “maybe 150 yards, thick pines.” That scope was built for shots he was never going to take, at a weight and price he was going to regret carrying up a ladder stand every morning of the season.

This happens more than people admit. Magnification gets sold on the box like it’s the whole story, and a lot of hunters end up buying glass sized for a caliber of shooting they don’t actually do. The numbers don’t lie here: most whitetail kills in the eastern half of the country happen under 100 yards, and most Western game is taken under 300. Yet the scope aisle at a lot of big box stores is stacked with 4-16x and 6-24x optics like everyone’s shooting across a canyon.

What magnification actually does to your hunting scope #

Magnification is just how much the target gets enlarged in your field of view. Higher power narrows your field of view, reduces exit pupil size (which matters a lot at dawn and dusk), and magnifies your own wobble and breathing right along with the target. That last part gets glossed over in marketing copy. Crank a scope to 20x off a bipod on uneven ground and you’ll watch your crosshair swim around like it’s seasick. On paper more power sounds like more precision, but past a certain point it’s just more movement to manage.

Field of view is the part hunters underrate until they miss a running shot because they couldn’t find the animal in the tube fast enough. A 3-9×40 at 3x might give you 35 feet of view at 100 yards. Push that same scope to 9x and you’re down to maybe 12-13 feet. If a hog breaks from cover at 40 yards moving fast, that field of view difference is the whole ballgame.

Match the glass to the terrain, not the catalog #

I’d argue most hunters would be better served buying based on the specific country they hunt rather than what’s popular on forums. If you’re in dense Wisconsin timber or thick Georgia pines, a 1-4x or 2-7x variable covers essentially every realistic shot you’ll get, and it does it fast when a deer materializes at 15 yards and you’ve got two seconds. Open country changes the math completely. Nevada mule deer hunters glassing across a canyon, or someone posted up on a Montana wheat field edge, genuinely benefit from 4-16x or even higher glass because the shots can stretch past 300 yards and there’s time to settle in and dial. Elk hunters in Montana timber sit in a strange middle ground. You might glass a bull at 400 yards in a clearcut, then have him close to 60 yards through timber twenty minutes later. That’s exactly the scenario where a wide-range variable, something like a 3-18x or 4-20x, earns its keep, assuming you actually practice dialing between the extremes before the season, not during it. The exit pupil problem nobody explains well #

Exit pupil is objective lens diameter divided by magnification, and it’s the single biggest reason high-power scopes struggle in low light. A 4-16×40 at 16x gives you a 2.5mm exit pupil. That’s smaller than your eye’s pupil will dilate to at dawn, meaning you’re leaving usable light on the table exactly when whitetail and elk are most active. Drop the same scope to 6x and the exit pupil balloons to 6.7mm, matching or exceeding your eye’s dilation and letting through everything the glass can gather.

This is the argument for buying a scope with a lower top-end magnification but genuinely excellent glass, rather than chasing power numbers on a spec sheet. Weight, mounting height, and the stuff nobody puts on the spec sheet #

Bigger magnification ranges mean bigger objective lenses, longer tubes, and heavier scopes. A 4-16×50 with a 30mm tube can run 20-24 ounces before rings. That’s not nothing when you’re carrying a rifle up a mountain in Nevada or sitting in a treestand for six hours in October. I’ve had guys tell me the extra weight “doesn’t matter” and then watch them shift their rifle three times in twenty minutes because the balance feels wrong off a rest.

There’s also a mounting height issue that doesn’t get discussed enough. Bigger objective lenses need taller rings to clear the barrel, which raises your line of sight above the bore and changes your cheek weld. What I’d actually tell someone buying today #

For 90 percent of whitetail hunters east of the Mississippi, a 2-7×32 or 3-9×40 covers every shot they’ll take in a season, weighs less, holds a wider field of view, and costs less than the high-magnification alternative. That’s not a compromise pick, it’s genuinely the right tool.

For Western open-country hunters glassing across drainages, something in the 4-16x or 4-20x range with a quality first or second focal plane reticle makes sense, but I’d still tell most of those hunters they’ll dial to 10x or 12x for the actual shot more often than they’ll ever touch max power. A word on reticle choice interacting with magnification #

Second focal plane reticles only read true at one magnification, usually max power, which means holdover marks are meaningless at lower settings. First focal plane reticles scale with magnification and stay accurate throughout the range, but they can look cluttered or thin at very low power. This matters more the wider your magnification range gets. A 2-7x scope in second focal plane is fine because most hunters run it near max anyway. A 4-20x scope in second focal plane is a problem if you’re actually using the low end for close timber shots and expecting the reticle marks to mean anything. None of this is me saying high magnification scopes are bad glass. Some of the premium 5-25x and 6-30x optics on the market right now have genuinely impressive glass for the price point, and if you’re shooting long range steel or doing serious Western hunting where 400-plus yard shots are realistic, that capability earns its keep. But buying that capability for a hunt where you’ll never dial past 9x is paying for and carrying weight you don’t need. The Fish and Wildlife Service’s hunter participation data consistently shows the overwhelming majority of harvested game falls well inside 200 yards nationally, and that gap between marketed capability and field reality is worth sitting with before you spend the money.

Field of view versus low light: pick your priority honestly #

If pressed to boil this down to one question, I’d ask a hunter: do you need to find and track a moving animal fast, or do you need to resolve detail on a stationary animal at distance in fading light? Timber and brush hunters need the first. Open-country glassing hunters need the second. Almost nobody actually needs both extremes in the same optic, and buying for both usually means compromising on both.

The guy at the shop bench ended up swapping his 6-24×50 for a 3-9×40 before season opener. Lighter rifle, faster target acquisition, and he saved himself close to $400 in the process. That’s the kind of decision that doesn’t show up on a spec sheet comparison, but it’s the one that actually changes whether you make the shot.
