How to zero a rifle scope (the way that actually works)
I burned through almost a full box of .223 the first time I tried to zero a scope, standing at a bench at a public range outside Prescott, wondering why my groups were scattered across the whole paper like buckshot. Turns out I hadn’t even bore-sighted the thing. Nobody told me that step existed. That’s kind of the whole reason I’m writing this one — because zeroing a scope isn’t hard once someone actually walks you through it, but every tutorial I found back then assumed I already knew half the vocabulary.
So here’s what I wish I knew when I started: zeroing a rifle scope is just the process of adjusting your optic so that where the crosshair sits is actually where the bullet lands, at a distance you pick. That’s it. It sounds simple because it is simple. The part that trips people up is the order of operations and the patience it takes. Trust me, I get it — standing at a bench making tiny click adjustments while your buddy is already done and packing up feels like torture. Do it right anyway.
What “zeroing a rifle scope” actually means #
Your scope has two turrets, usually labeled elevation (up/down) and windage (left/right). Each click moves the point of impact a set amount at a set distance, usually a quarter-inch or half-inch at 100 yards, though this varies by manufacturer so check your specific scope’s manual. When you “zero” at 100 yards, you’re telling the scope: at 100 yards, wherever the crosshair is, that’s where the bullet needs to hit.
Most hunters zero at 100 yards for centerfire rifles, though plenty of guys I know who hunt thick Wisconsin timber zero closer, like 50 yards, since their shots rarely stretch past that anyway. If you’re setting up a .22LR plinker, 50 yards is pretty standard too. There’s no single correct distance — it depends on what you’re hunting and where. I’d argue too many beginners default to 100 yards just because that’s what everyone says, without thinking about whether it actually matches how they’ll use the rifle.
Bore-sighting first, or you’re wasting ammo #
Before you fire a single round, bore-sight the rifle. This gets your scope roughly aligned with the bore so your first shots actually land on paper instead of somewhere in the berm. Two ways to do it: the cheap way and the slightly-less-cheap way.
The cheap way, for bolt actions only, is removing the bolt and looking straight down the bore at a target 25 yards out, then adjusting the scope’s crosshair to match what you’re seeing through the bore. It works, it’s free, and it takes some patience holding the rifle steady in a rest. The other option is a laser bore-sighter that fits in the chamber or muzzle and projects a dot onto your target — faster, works on semi-autos, costs maybe $30-40. I use one now. Didn’t back when I started because I didn’t know they existed, and that’s basically the reason for this whole article.
Skip this step and you’ll spend your first five or six rounds just hunting for paper. I’ve watched guys do this at the range and burn through a box of ammo before they even start the actual zeroing process. Not a great way to spend a Saturday, and ammo isn’t exactly cheap these days.
Starting at 25 yards before you ever go to 100 #
Here’s a step alot of first-timers skip, and it costs them: start at 25 yards, not 100. At 25 yards you can get on paper almost immediately after bore-sighting, and any adjustments you make there will get you roughly on paper at 100 yards too, since the trajectory hasn’t diverged much yet.
Set up a solid rest. Sandbags, a lead sled, whatever you’ve got, but get the rifle stable. Fire a three-shot group, aiming at the same point of aim each time. Don’t adjust after one shot. Wait for the group.
Once you’ve got your three-shot group, measure how far the center of that group is from your point of aim, in inches. Then use your scope’s click value to figure out how many clicks you need in which direction. If your group is 2 inches low and 1 inch left at 25 yards, and your scope adjusts a quarter-inch per click at 100 yards (which is roughly an eighth-inch per click at 25 yards), you’re doing some math, but it’s not complicated math. Moving to 100 yards and doing it for real #
Once you’re reasonably centered at 25 yards, move the target out to 100. This is where the real zeroing happens. Same process: stable rest, three-shot groups, adjust between groups not between shots.
A few things I’ve learned the hard way here. First, let the barrel cool between groups if you’re shooting a lightweight sporter-profile barrel — heat causes the point of impact to wander, and you’ll chase a zero that isn’t actually moving because of your adjustments, it’s moving because your barrel’s warm. Second, use a proper rest, not your daypack propped on the bench. I know it’s tempting. Third, call your shots. If you know you jerked the trigger or your natural point of aim was off, that shot doesn’t count toward your group evaluation. Be honest with yourself about it.
Keep adjusting and firing three-shot groups until your group center lands on your point of aim. This might take three groups, might take six. If it’s taking more than that, something else might be going on: a loose scope mount, a bore-sighter issue, ammo inconsistency. Don’t just keep clicking and hoping.
Confirming your zero instead of trusting it #
Getting a group centered once isn’t the same as having a confirmed zero. Shoot another group, cold bore, after you’ve stepped away for ten or fifteen minutes. Does it still land where you expect? A rifle that’s dead-on for one string and then wanders on the next string usually has a mounting issue, loose base screws, or a scope that’s not holding zero internally, which does happen occasionally even with decent optics.
I’d also recommend confirming your zero seasonally, not just once and forget it. Scopes get bumped in truck beds, mounts loosen with recoil over hundreds of rounds, and temperature swings between summer sight-in and a November hunt can shift point of impact more than people expect. Picking the right zero distance for your actual hunting #
This is where I think a lot of beginner advice falls short. A 100-yard zero is fine for a lot of situations, but if you’re chasing whitetail in tight Midwest timber where shots rarely go past 75 yards, a 150-yard zero might actually serve you better since it flattens your trajectory over the ranges you’ll actually be shooting. You don’t need a fortune in equipment to zero a scope properly, but a few things help more than people expect. A decent rest is the biggest one; sandbags work fine and cost almost nothing. A chronograph isn’t necessary for basic zeroing but becomes useful once you start stretching distances and need real velocity data instead of the box’s advertised numbers. What actually goes wrong at the range #
Most zeroing problems aren’t optics problems, they’re shooter or setup problems. Inconsistent cheek weld changes your eye position relative to the reticle, which shifts your apparent point of aim even though nothing on the rifle changed. Not letting the barrel cool causes point of impact to drift group to group. Using a rest that isn’t actually stable — I’ve seen guys try to zero off a car hood — introduces enough movement that you’re chasing ghosts instead of your actual zero.
And ammo matters more than beginners realize. Switching brands or bullet weights after you’ve zeroed will shift your point of impact, sometimes significantly. If you sight in with 150-grain and then hunt with 165-grain out of the same rifle, don’t expect the same zero. Test with the actual ammo you plan to hunt or shoot with, not whatever was cheapest that week.
Zeroing a scope isn’t glamorous. Nobody posts range selfies captioned “spent two hours adjusting turrets today!” But it’s the single most important thing you’ll do before that rifle ever goes into the field, and doing it properly, patiently, with the right process, is the difference between a clean ethical shot this fall and a wounded animal you can’t recover.
