Thermal vs night vision for hogs: what the data says
Last February, on a lease outside Comfort, Texas, I sat a feeder for four hours running a thermal monocular in one hand and a gen-3 night vision scope mounted on a rifle in the other. Thirty-one hogs came through that night. I picked up every single one on thermal before they hit the corn. On night vision, I missed four of them entirely because they came in through brush along the fence line, and gen-3 tech needs at least some ambient light bouncing off a target to paint a usable image. The numbers don’t lie here: for hogs specifically, thermal wins on detection almost every time. But the full answer is more complicated than a one-line verdict, and price, moon phase, and what you’re actually hunting all move the needle.
Why thermal detects animals night vision can’t #
Thermal imaging doesn’t care about light at all. It reads heat signatures — a 101-degree hog body against a 60-degree ground temp is going to glow on a thermal screen whether there’s a full moon or pitch black overcast. Night vision, even good gen-3 stuff, is an image intensifier. It’s amplifying existing photons, starlight, moonlight, whatever’s available. Take that away — new moon, heavy cloud cover, dense cedar brush — and night vision performance drops off fast. I’ve run FLIR and Pulsar thermal units side by side with ATN and AGM digital night vision on the same nights, same properties, and the thermal unit consistently picked up hogs at 300-plus yards in conditions where the NV scope was struggling past 100.
That’s the physics of it. It’s not marketing. Hogs also travel through thick brush a lot more than deer do, rooting and moving under canopy where moonlight barely penetrates, which plays directly into thermal’s strength.
Where night vision still makes sense #
I’ll push back on the idea that thermal makes NV obsolete for hog hunting, because it doesn’t, not entirely. Night vision gives you a genuine visual image — you can identify a hog’s tusks, tell a sow from a boar, read body language before you shoot. Thermal gives you a heat blob. At 150 yards a thermal image tells you “warm mammal, roughly hog-sized.” A decent gen-3 NV scope at the same range, under a quarter moon, tells you it’s definitely a hog and not somebody’s loose dog or a calf that wandered onto the wrong lease. That identification gap matters more than people admit, especially in mixed-species country where identifying your target beyond reasonable doubt isn’t optional, it’s the law in every state I’ve hunted.
If you’re hunting a property with predictable moonlit conditions and open pasture, digital or gen-3 night vision is still a perfectly legitimate tool, and it’s usually $1,500 to $3,000 cheaper than a comparable thermal setup.
The actual numbers on detection range #
On paper, thermal specs look inflated, and I want to be skeptical about that before anyone takes a manufacturer’s word for it. A company claiming “detect a hog at 1,000 yards” is almost always talking about detection, not identification, and definitely not a clean shot. Detection means you see a warm blob on screen. Identification means you can confirm species. Shot-ready means you’ve got the resolution and stabilization to put a bullet where you want it.
In my own testing with a 12-micron 640×480 core thermal scope, I got reliable detection out to about 700 yards in flat pasture, confident species identification around 300 to 350 yards, and I wouldn’t call a shot ethical past 200 yards even with a rested rifle. Compare that to a budget 384-resolution thermal unit, and identification range drops to maybe 150 to 200 yards. Resolution and sensor pitch matter more than the marketing copy on the box, and a lot of $2,000 thermal units are running sensors that were mid-tier five years ago.
Cost, batteries, and the stuff nobody puts on the spec sheet #
Thermal units burn battery faster than most night vision setups, especially in cold weather, and a dead battery at 1 a.m. on a 200-acre lease with no cell signal is a real problem, not a hypothetical one. I carry three spare battery packs now after learning that lesson the hard way on a hunt near Uvalde. Gen-3 night vision tubes, by contrast, sip power and can run all night on a couple of CR123s.
Price is the other honest conversation. Entry-level thermal scopes start around $2,500 and climb past $6,000 for the good glass. A comparable gen-3 night vision scope runs $2,000 to $4,000. Digital night vision, which is a separate category using cameras and screens rather than image tubes, can be had for $600 to $1,200, and honestly it’s come a long way, though it still struggles in true darkness the way tube-based gen-3 doesn’t.

A property-specific case for going thermal-first #
I’ve hunted hogs in enough different terrain now — thick South Texas brush country, open Panhandle wheat fields, river-bottom hardwoods in East Texas — to say the terrain matters as much as the optic. Dense brush country, where you’re detecting movement in cover rather than open field, favors thermal heavily because you’re picking up heat through gaps in vegetation that your eye or an image-intensified scope simply won’t resolve. Open agricultural fields under decent moonlight narrow the gap between thermal and NV considerably, and I’ve had nights on Panhandle wheat where a good gen-3 scope performed nearly as well as thermal for a fraction of the investment.
If your hunting is mostly thick cover, night hunts on unpredictable moon phases, and covering large tracts fast, get the thermal. If you’re on smaller, more open properties with reliable moonlight and you’re budget-conscious, gen-3 night vision remains a defensible choice, and I wouldn’t tell a first-time hog hunter they made a mistake buying it.
Regulatory reality check before you buy anything #
None of this matters if you can’t legally use the gear where you hunt. Night hunting regulations for feral hogs vary significantly by state, and several states restrict thermal or night vision use to landowners or require specific permits even for legal depredation hunts. Texas allows night hunting of hogs on private land with landowner consent and no special permit for the optic itself, but that’s Texas-specific; it is not a blanket national rule. Before buying either category of optic, check your state Fish and Wildlife or DNR regulations directly. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service maintains general invasive species guidance at fws.gov, and NSSF’s hunter education resources at nssf.org are a good starting point for understanding how state-level firearms and hunting regs intersect with night optics generally.

What I’d actually buy right now #
If money’s genuinely no object, I’m running a 640-resolution, 12-micron thermal riflescope with at least 50Hz refresh rate, because low refresh rate creates lag on moving targets and hogs move erratically when spooked. That refresh spec gets left off a lot of marketing pages, and it shouldn’t, because it’s the difference between a smooth tracking picture and a stuttering mess when a sounder breaks for the treeline.
For a working budget, somewhere in the $2,500 to $3,500 range, I’d rather have a solid mid-resolution thermal than a top-tier gen-3 NV scope, purely because of the detection advantage in brush. That’s my contrarian take and I know some traditional NV guys will disagree with me on it — I’ve had that argument at more than one hunting camp. But three seasons of running both categories side by side on the same leases has me leaning thermal for hog work specifically, even though I still keep a gen-3 scope in the truck for open-field nights.
