Choosing hunting scope magnification that actually works

Last November I sat with a client at a range outside Cody, Wyoming, glassing a 4-9×40 against a 6-24×50 on the same rifle, same load, same 300-yard steel plate. He’d been convinced for years that the 24x was the better scope because, on paper, more magnification means more precision. It doesn’t. He shot tighter, faster groups with the 4-9x. That’s the whole article, honestly, but let’s get into the numbers because that’s where this actually gets decided.

Hunting scope magnification is one of those specs that gets sold to buyers instead of explained to them. Manufacturers know a 6-30x scope looks more impressive on a shelf than a 3-9x, and the “more is better” instinct is hard to shake once you’ve paid retail. But magnification is a tool matched to a job, not a bragging right. Pick it wrong and you’ll fight your equipment every single hunt.

What magnification actually does to your sight picture #

Every added power of magnification narrows your field of view and shrinks your exit pupil, unless the objective lens grows to compensate — which is why high-power scopes get physically larger and heavier. At 9x on a 40mm objective you’re working with a reasonably forgiving field of view, something in the neighborhood of 12-14 feet at 100 yards depending on the model. Crank that same tube to 20x and you’re down to 6 feet or less. That matters enormously when a whitetail is moving through brush at 60 yards and you need to find it fast, not scan for it.

There’s also the mirage problem nobody talks about enough. Above about 12x, heat mirage off open ground on a warm afternoon starts to visibly boil the image, especially past 400 yards. I’ve watched hunters crank their variable all the way up “for a better look” and end up with a wavier, less usable picture than they’d have had at half the power. The glass isn’t lying to you; the atmosphere is doing exactly what atmosphere does, and higher magnification just shows you more of it.

Match magnification to your actual hunting distance, not your longest possible shot #

This is where most buyers go wrong. They ask “what’s the farthest I might ever shoot” and buy magnification for that outlier scenario, then use the scope wrong for the other 95 percent of their hunts. A more honest question is: what’s my typical shot distance, season after season?

If you hunt whitetail from a treestand in Ohio timber, most shots break somewhere between 20 and 100 yards. A 2-7x or 3-9x scope covers that entire range with room to spare, and the wider field of view at the low end helps enormously when a deer steps out unexpectedly close. If you’re hunting mule deer or pronghorn across open Wyoming or Nevada country where shots commonly stretch past 300 yards, a 4-16x or 4-20x earns its keep. For someone chasing desert mule deer in Nevada’s wide-open basins, I’d actually lean toward the higher end of that range, since target identification at distance matters as much as the shot itself out there.

I’ll admit I used to tell everyone to just buy a 3-9×40 and be done with it. That’s still solid advice for probably 70 percent of American hunters. But it’s not universal, and treating it as gospel undersells the guys genuinely shooting long in open terrain.

The low end of the range matters more than people think #

Everyone obsesses over top-end magnification and ignores the bottom of the range, which is a mistake. A scope’s minimum power determines how usable it is for close, fast shots, particularly on hogs or bear encountered in thick cover. If you hunt hogs in Texas brush country, a scope that bottoms out at 4x or 5x is going to cost you shots on animals inside 30 yards, because your field of view is too narrow to track a moving target through mesquite.

This is part of why low-power variables like 1-6x or 1-8x have become popular on hunting rifles used in mixed terrain — you get true 1x for close, fast target acquisition and enough top end for a reasonable poke past 200 yards. It’s not a universal answer, but for hog hunting or dangerous game backup rifles, that low minimum genuinely changes outcomes in the field, not just on paper.

Weight, tube diameter, and the tradeoffs nobody puts on the box #

Higher magnification ranges generally mean bigger, heavier scopes with larger objective lenses and often larger tube diameters to handle the increased internal adjustment range. A 6-24×50 in a 30mm or 34mm tube is a substantially heavier package than a 3-9×40 in a 1-inch tube, sometimes by close to a pound once you add rings. If you’re hunting mountain terrain on foot, carrying that extra weight for a magnification range you rarely use above 12x is just dead weight on your rifle.

Fixed power scopes still deserve consideration #

I’ll throw a mildly unpopular opinion out here: for a huge number of deer hunters, a good fixed 4x or 6x scope is a smarter buy than a variable, and the industry has mostly talked people out of considering them. Fixed power scopes have fewer internal moving parts, hold zero more reliably over rough handling, and are typically lighter and less expensive for equivalent glass quality. If your hunting is genuinely one type of terrain, one type of shot, the variable’s flexibility is solving a problem you don’t have.

That said, most hunters hunt more than one property, more than one season, more than one style of terrain across a hunting career, so a variable remains the practical choice for most people buying one all-purpose rifle. Just don’t assume variable automatically means better; it means more adaptable, which is a different thing.

How this plays out with common hunting calibers and rifles #

Testing magnification before you buy, or at least before you hunt with it #

The numbers don’t lie, and neither does a range session. Before opening day, dial your scope to the lowest and highest power settings and actually shoot groups at your realistic hunting distances at both. Don’t just crank it to max for a bench session; that tells you almost nothing about field performance. If you shoot noticeably better at a lower setting, that’s real data, not a compromise.

If you hunt whitetail in timber or mixed farmland, a 2-7x or 3-9x is genuinely enough scope, and buying past that range mostly adds weight and cost without adding hits. If you’re hunting open western terrain where shots regularly stretch past 300 yards, a 4-16x or 4-20x earns its place, but resist the urge to buy magnification for a shot you’ll take once a decade. And if you’re chasing hogs or hunting thick cover where animals appear close and move fast, prioritize a low minimum power over a huge top end; a 1-6x will outperform a 4-16x in that scenario every time it matters.

Glass quality inside that range matters more than the number printed on the turret, for what it’s worth — a mediocre 4-16x will lose to a well-built 3-9x in actual field resolution and light transmission most days.
