Most Powerful Air Pistols in 2023

Most Powerful Air Pistols in 2023 (Pellet and BB)

You’ve come to the right place if you are looking for a powerful air gun. I have created a chart that compares the maximum velocity, caliber and rate of fire as well as ammo capacity. I have included spring-powered air pistols as well as CO2 powered air and PCP powered air pistols.

The list will include a lot of pellet pistols. I will also add some BB guns. In general, I prefer to use pellet pistols. However, some of the powerful full-auto BB guns are also fun to shoot.

Key Terms

The muzzle velocity is the speed at which the pellets or BBs leave the barrel. It is usually measured in feet per seconds (FPS) for air pistols.

Muzzle Energy: This is the amount kinetic energy that the projectile has as it leaves the barrel.

Kinetic Energy: Kinetic energie is the energy that the bullet transfers to its target. When people think about power, they usually picture this. You can calculate the kinetic energy by multiplying the mass of the object by its velocity (K.E. = 1/2 mv2).

The stopping power of a weapon or firearm is its ability to incapacitate the target. The physical properties of a bullet, biology of the target and shot location are all factors that affect stopping power. The stopping power of a round is usually correlated with its caliber. However, other factors such as velocity, projectile weight, and projectile form also play a part.

What you need to know about stopping power

It’s not as simple as you may think to determine the stopping power of an Air Rifle. Remember that high kinetic energy is not always a sign of stopping power. The diameter, weight and shape of the projectile will also affect the amount of damage that the pellet or BB can cause.

Airguns are often confused with their power by people who are new to the sport. Muzzle velocity does not take into account any of the above factors.

What is the Difference between.177 and.22 caliber?

Remember that there are 4 main calibers:.177,.20,.22 and.25).

In the air gun community, there is a never-ending debate over what caliber is best. The debate usually revolves around the question of which caliber would be better for hunting. Truthfully, it comes down to personal preference. Both calibers excel in different areas.

Many.22-caliber pellets fans will say that the.22-caliber rounds are twice as large and heavier than.177-caliber rounds, which means that even though.177 caliber round travel at higher speeds,.22 caliber rounds have more stopping power and kinetic energy.

Fans of the.177 caliber will say that pellet weight doesn’t matter if you’re shooting at a varmint’s brain. They’ll argue that a well placed shot is what matters most. The.177 fanboys also claim that the.22 caliber’s diameter will allow it to reach terminal speed quicker and lose velocity more quickly the farther away you are. At long distances, a.177 may have greater stopping power and energy. The.177 fans also claim that the smaller pellets are able to penetrate deeper into a varmint’s tissue because they have a smaller area. This causes more damage to the vital organs.

When is a larger pellet always better?

Manufacturers have developed super-lightweight pellets called Performance Ballistic Alloy (PBA) to test their firearms and pistols. Pellets are not designed to go faster than 950 feet per second (especially.177 pellets). Lightweight.177 pellets will tumble and yaw if fired at speeds above 950 feet per seconds. This will also cause them to be less accurate and slow down more quickly. Lighter pellets also slow down quicker and have less kinetic power than heavier pellets traveling at the same speed.

Air Pistol Reviews

There are many air pistols available on the market. I have done my best to review the most powerful air pistols, but I cannot possibly do so. Please let me know if you have a more powerful air pistol than the ones on the list.

The Best Air Pistols

1. Benjamin Marauder Pellet Pistol

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .22
Velocity: 700 feet per second
Pre-charged pneumatic

Benjamin Marauder air pistol and rifle are the gold standard of the airgun industry. It’s not only one of most powerful and accurate.22 air guns on the market but also one of most powerful. It also has a very impressive range, especially for a pistol. The stock can be removed so that you can also use it as carbine.

Marauder air pistol is one of few that I recommend for pest control and hunting small game. The Marauder has an eight-shot magazine, a two-stage trigger and can shoot 2 inch groups at 50 yards if the pellets are right. This thing can shoot dime-sized groupings at closer distances.

You can expect 30 to 35 powerful and accurate shots when charged at around 2700 PSI. The Marauder is a popular air pistol because it has an 8-round bolt-action magazine that’s reliable. It also offers good accuracy and range.

Marauder costs more than other products in this list but I think it’s worth it.

You’ll need to find a way to refill the air reservoir. A high-pressure hand pumps is one of the easiest ways to fill your air reservoir. The Ben High-Pressure hand pump can be found on Amazon here. There are cheaper hand pumps available, but this one is reliable.

You won’t require a hand-pump if you have an SCUBA set up or a high pressure compressor designed to handle 3000 psi and higher. Most people don’t have these things in their homes.

The only downside to this is that it doesn’t have sights. Most people purchase an adaptor, like the one shown here on Amazon and an cheap scope. You can read our reviews of the best red-dot sights or air riflescopes by clicking on the links. This rifle is very accurate, and I personally would add a scope to it.

The Good:

  • Pressure gauge integrated
  • Includes removable shoulder stock
  • Two-stage quality trigger
  • Quiet and powerful

The Not So Good:

  • Manual pumping required
  • The air pistol is a bit heavier than other air guns

2. Hatsan Model 25 Supercharger QE

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity 850 FPS alloy/700 fps lead
Power source: Break barrel lever

Review: The Hatsan Model 25 Supercharger has a built-in tank and is the strongest air pistol available.

Most.177 air guns with a single cocking or break barrel fire at 500fps. The Hatsan Model 25 can fire at 700-850 feet per seconds with just one cock. Note that the Supercharger requires around 40 pounds to fire. It takes a lot of force, but for adults it is not difficult to do.

The Model 25 Supercharger has a lot of features. The Model 25 Supercharger has a good two-stage adjustable Quattro Trigger, a synthetic stock and textured ergonomic grip. You can mount a red dot or scope on a dovetail mounting, but the fiber optic sights that come with this rifle are also quite good.

Bottom line: the Hatsan Model 25 Supercharger has a powerful, reliable, and affordable performance. The.177 caliber is also available, but the performance of this version is not as good as that of the.22.

The Good:

  • Air pistol with spring powered pneumatic single stroke
  • 2-stage adjustable Quattro trigger
  • Includes detachable cocking lever
  • Adjustable rear sight for elevation and windage

The Not So Good:

  • The same option, but in a heavier and more bulky form
  • Air guns have a relatively high recoil.
  • Louder than many other options
  • Single-shot mechanisms

3. Crosman 2240 Bolt Action (Best CO2 Powered)

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .22
Velocity: 460 feet per second
Power source: CO2

This is my review of the Crosman 2240, which is currently the only CO2-powered air gun on this list. It’s a great deal for the price. It’s performance is similar to that of the Crosman Classic Pump 1302 (the next gun on this list).

Crosman’s 2240 bolt-action rifle is easy to use. You just have to load the pellet and work the bolt between shots. The rounds are fired much quicker and with less effort. It’s a nice feature if you plan to use this pistol as a pest control tool.

You will need to buy additional CO2 cartridges for the 2240, compared to 1322.

This pistol, which is a.22 calibre air pistol and shoots at 450 feet per seconds, is ideal for pest control. It is known as “The Rat Catcher”.

You can buy a scope mount like this on Amazon and attach a red dot or scope to it. You could mount a red dot or scope on a mount, like the one on Amazon. But it’s really not necessary.

The Good:

  • Single shot, bolt action, CO2 air pistol
  • Steel barrel for rifles
  • Both grip panels have thumb rests
  • Made in USA

The Not So Good:

  • Temperature fluctuations can affect CO2 power
  • Purchase of additional CO2 cartridges is required
  • Single-shot mechanisms

4. Crosman American classic pump (Best value)

Check Amazon Price

Caliber:.177 o.22
Velocity: 600 feet/second (.177 caliber)
Velocity: 460 feet/second (.22 caliber)
Multi-pump Pneumatic power source

The Crosman American Classic pellet gun is the most popular of all time. Personally, I’d choose this over the 2240, but they are both great. It’s fun for me to be able to grab a pellet gun and go. It is powerful enough to kill pests, and it’s cheap to use. This pistol has variable power so you can use it to shoot cans at home instead of the maximum power.

It is true that you have to pump your forearm and work the bolt between shots, but it is not a huge deal.

If you do plan on buying a scope, then you can use a mount like this one from Amazon. You can mount a scope using a mounting like the one available on Amazon.

This air pistol is available in either.177 or 22 caliber. The 1377 is the.177 caliber version and the 1322 is the.22.

Both versions are powerful enough to kill mice, chipmunks and rats. They also work well on sparrows.

The Good:

  • Steel barrel for rifles
  • Forearm with a smooth-pump
  • Open sights with adjustable rear peeps and a fixed front blade
  • Pump with variable velocity control
  • Affordable price point

The Not So Good:

  • Manual pumping required
  • Limited accessories and modifications are available
  • Air guns are relatively loud (for an airgun)

5. Daisy Powerline Model 415 CO2 Pistol

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 500 feet per second
Power source: CO2

The Daisy Powerline is a great BB gun. It is powerful, well-built, has a smooth bore barrel made of steel, can hold 12 BBs and is semiautomatic. You can also expect around 150 shots from a CO2 cylinder.

The pistol has a fiber optic front sight and a fixed open rear sight that are very good for the price.

This combo comes with a pistol, shooting glass, 350 Daisy BBs and 3 CO2 cartridges.

Bottom line: The Daisy Powerline is a great BB gun for the price. Check out the Daisy Powerline Power Kit below if you’re looking for a bit more power.

The Good:

  • Steel barrel with smoothbore
  • 21-shot built-in magazine
  • Black grip with molded design
  • Included Accessories

The Not So Good:

  • Temperature fluctuations can affect CO2 power
  • Some CO2 powered models are not as efficient as others
  • Single shot design
  • Plastic Construction

6. Umarex Glock 19 Gen. 3 BB Pistol

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 365 feet per second
Power source: CO2

This is my review of the Umarex Glock 19 BB Pistol Gen. 3. It’s a realistic air pistol that replicates the popular Glock 19 Handgun. This CO2-powered BB gun offers an authentic shooting feel for Glock fans. Its design shows great attention to detail, including Glock trademarks and a realistic slide movement. It feels sturdy and well-built, allowing for a satisfying shooting session.

The Umarex Glock 19 BB Pistol is a reliable performer. The Umarex Glock 19 Gen. 3 BB Pistol shoots 4.5mm Steel BBs with a blowback mechanism that enhances the realistic feel. The 16-round magazine with drop-free technology allows you to fire multiple shots without needing to reload. Adjustable sights also help in precision shooting.

7. Crosman Vigilante 357

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177Velocity: 435 feet per second
Power source: CO2

Review: The Crosman Vigilante CO2 Air Pistol comes with an extra magazine clip and a holster. This package includes one B clip, four pellet clips and a holster. The rifled barrel will make the gun more accurate, and it will last longer. It does, however, shoot BBs perfectly well.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the Vigilante, especially for its price. If you want to extend the seal’s life and prevent air leakage on all CO2-powered air guns, it is best to apply a small amount of gun oil to the tip of each CO2 cartridge. This air pistol is also gas-efficient, with about 80 to 100 shots per CO2 cartridge.

It is most accurate when used as a single action revolver, but can also be operated as a dual-action revolver. The rear sight can be adjusted and the sights are quite nice. The sights have been adjusted before the revolver ships so that they are accurate out of the package.

The Vigilante 357 has a great look and is fun to use. It also comes with a holster, and some extra clips.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.

9. Crosman 2300S

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 520 feet per second
CO2

Crosman’s 2300s is an incredibly powerful and accurate pistol for its price. Crossman collaborated with professional shooters to create an entry-level competitive pistol at a fractional cost. I think that they have hit the mark with the 200S.

This airgun is incredibly accurate, thanks to its 10.1 Lothar Walther match barrel. The hammer spring can be adjusted between 440 and 520 FPS. You can expect around 60 shots from a single CO2 cartridge.

The Good:

  • IHMSA production class silhouette rules are met.
  • Adjustable hammer spring
  • Value for money

The Not So Good:

  • Temperature fluctuations can affect CO2 power
  • The CO2 efficiency of the current technology is not optimal

10. Urmax Strike

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .22
Velocity: 520 feet per second
Power source: Multi-pump pneumatic

The Umarex Strike Point Multi-Pump Air Pistol reminds me of the American Classic. It is available in both.177 &.22. The gun is pretty powerful after a few pumpings, but gets more powerful as you increase the number of pumps (maximum 10).

The pistol is good for target shooting, and it’s strong enough to use for pest control. The pistol is equipped with a SilenceAir sound damper, which has five chambers and is permanently mounted on the gun. This reduces noise at downrange.

If you are buying it for pest control or hunting, I recommend the.22-caliber version. The larger pellet does lose about 100fps, but the weight compensates for that and it feels more powerful to me.

It’s heavier than the American Classic. It’s a little heavier than the American Classic.

The pistol features a cross-bolt safe, a fiber optic sight on the front, and a fully adjustable rear sight. Note that there is no area on this pistol to mount an optical.

The Good:

  • Power variable
  • Durable frame for all weathers
  • SilenceAir 5-chamber sound dampener

The Not So Good:

  • Pumping requires significant effort
  • No space for mounting an optical
  • Only decent triggers are available.

12. Crosman Benjamin Sheridan Remington 1875 Revolver

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 450 feet per second
CO2

Review: I found this to be an interesting replica of a single-action Crosman revolver. The nickel-plated body is very well made, and the ivory-style plastic grip looks like it was made of ivory. It’s cool that it has both BBs and pellets. The ammo comes in cartridges or shell casings. Shell casings have labels for BBs and Pellets so that you don’t mix them up.

This pistol has a smoothbore muzzle, which means you can fire BBs without worrying about damaging the barrel or wearing it out.

This gun is designed more as a replica or plinking weapon. It is powerful, but I wouldn’t use it for pest control or hunting.

The packaging is very cheap. The packaging is pretty cheap. I’d expect better from something priced at this level, but you won’t notice it once you start shooting.

The Good:

  • Single Action
  • Replica of the Remington 1875 rifle
  • Smoothbore that shoots Pellets and BBs

The Not So Good:

  • Temperature fluctuations can affect CO2 power
  • Single-action only
  • Limit shot capacity

13. Sig Sauer P365 Air Pistol

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 295 feet per second
Power source: CO2

Review: The Sig Sauer P365 Air Pistol, a compact airgun that is accurate and designed to mimic the popular Sig Sauer P365 firearm. This is a CO2-powered semi-automatic air pistol which offers a realistic experience. Its design shows great attention to detail, including the textured grip and slide serrations. Overall, the build quality is excellent and provides a solid feel in your hand.

The P365 Air Pistol is a high-performance air pistol that delivers accuracy and consistency. The P365 Air Pistol shoots.177-caliber pellets, and has a blowback mechanism that simulates the slide motion of a firearm. The CO2 source provides reliable performance and the 12-round mag allows multiple shots without reloading. Adjustable sights enhance precision and allow shooters to accurately zero their aim.

This air pistol’s authenticity to the Sig Sauer P365 is one of its most notable features. The air pistol has the same look, feel and operation as the real firearm, which makes it a great training tool for Sig Sauer fans or a fun alternative. The Sig Sauer P365 is a popular airgun because of its attention to design and accuracy.

The Good:

  • Genuine P365 replica
  • Adjustable sights
  • Blowback action
  • Excellent accuracy

The Not So Good:

  • The pistols on this list are not as powerful as others

14. Umarex Legends M712 .177 Caliber Steel BB Airgun

Check Amazon Price

Caliber: .177
Velocity: 360 feet per second
CO2

Our Review

The Legends M712 may not be the strongest BB gun, but it is the fastest and holds 18 BBs. This is a German replica BB pistol that feels and looks great. It can be fired in full-auto, but accuracy and power are sacrificed. Full-auto firing also consumes CO2 cartridges as well as BBs at an insane rate.

Stock up on CO2 cartridges if you decide to buy this airgun! If you decide to purchase this replica, it is difficult to load the magazine. I would recommend purchasing some additional magazines.

The blowback effect that I mentioned in the section on buying guides is also present. I find it a waste of carbon dioxide, but I must admit that this feature is pretty cool.

The front sight is fixed and the rear sights can be adjusted for elevation.

The Good

  • Manual Safety
  • Semi-auto mode
  • Magazines that house Co2
  • Full-auto blowback action

The Not So Good

  • Temperature fluctuations can affect CO2 power
  • Some air pistols are not as efficient at converting CO2 as others
  • The trigger can be heavy and creepy.

What is more powerful, pellets or BBs?

Pellet guns have a greater range and are more powerful at a distance than BB guns. BBs work well for plinking in the back yard, and some CO2 powered BB guns are available, but are not as aerodynamic and accurate as pellets. They are therefore less suitable for pest control and hunting. Pellets can only be fired from rifled barrels. The spin on the pellet improves accuracy and reduces airborne debris. The only BBs available are in the.177-caliber.

What Is The Best Type Of Pellet?

Pellets come in many different shapes, including hollow points, hollow domed, and pointed pellets. The most common pellet is the dome pellet, but it really depends on the application.

The most common pellet used in hunting is the round-nosed pellet or dome pellet. Their shape allows them to deliver a good amount of energy and also gives them a good terminal performance. They are also the most accurate pellets.

When the shooter does not want the round to penetrate deeply into the target, flat pellets or wadcutters may be used. For example, they may not want the round to travel through the target and hit something beyond it. Wadcutter pellets are also required in some airgun shooting competitions so that the hole is circular.

Hollow Point Pellets

Field tips or pointed pellets were designed specifically for hunting, and to penetrate deeply. Pointed pellets may not always be the most accurate depending on your gun. Truthfully, different guns work better with specific pellets. It’s important to research the pellets that will work best with your gun after you have chosen it. You can test the gun yourself. You can also watch some good YouTube videos. Crossman Premier Pellets are the pellet of choice for many shooters.

Keep Quality In Mind

Accuracy is the single most important factor to consider when it comes pellets used for hunting. Pellets that are consistently manufactured and perform well in your rifle should be sought out. Poor quality pellets can make it difficult to get a tight grouping, no matter how many times you practice.

Pellet Shape

The body of the Pellet has an impact on the Ballistics. The most common shape actually is diablo. The pinched waist of the diablo pellet and the flared tail (usually hollow) make it easy to identify. The flared tip creates a lot of drag which makes the pellet fly straighter but also less far than cone-shaped ammunition.

Power Sources

Spring Piston Break and Barrel Break

Spring piston air guns are the least expensive and simplest air pistols. You have to manually cock the air pistols, so it takes longer to fire. They are nice, however, because they do not require external power sources like CO2 cartridges and a pump. A spring pistol air gun is a good option if you want something cheap for backyard plinking. There are a few on my list that I think are impressive.

CO2

CO2 powered air pistols use 12 gram cartridges as a standard to propel the pellets or BB. It is common to store the CO2 cartridge inside the pistol’s handle. It’s out-of-the way and barely noticeable. You can shoot fairly fast with CO2 air pistols (some even are semi-auto), but you won’t have to purchase a filling station or hand pump like you would for a PCP. The 12-gram CO2 cartridges may be cheap, but they add up in price over time. If you plan to buy airguns, you might want to make a larger investment by purchasing a PCP.

PCP

The PCP air guns have an internal reservoir. PCP air pistols require a higher initial investment, as you need either a high pressure hand pump or a high pressure compressor capable of filling up to 3000 PSI. In the reviews that follow, I’ll show you some good pumps. The number one pistol on this list is a PCP.

Pellet Material

Pellets can be made from many different materials, including lead.

Pellets will travel faster if they are allowed to. These pellets are used by many manufacturers to test the velocity of their pellet guns.

Pistol or Rifle?

If I had to choose, I would always pick a rifle, but it’s sometimes more convenient to carry around a BB pistol or pellet gun. Rifles tend to be preferred as they are more powerful, accurate and can reach long distances. There are many pistols that have the same power as air rifles.

Cost of Operation

If you want to use BBs to throw cans around the backyard or to give a child as a present, they are more affordable. Pellets may be cheaper than regular ammo but BBs can’t be beat. Amazon offers 6000 high-quality BBs for less than $10.

Crosman Copperhead 4.5mm Copper Coated BBs In EZ-Pour Bottle For BB Air Pistols And BB Air Guns

Tactical Force Premium 6mm

Tactical Force Premium Biodegradable 6mm Airsoft BBS Ammo .20 Gram 10000 Count

Rates of fire

Single Shot

Bolt action and lever action are both options for single-shot air rifles. Air pistols that are single-shot require you to cock them between shots. This also means that when you pull the trigger, only one round leaves the chamber.

Semi-Auto

You do not need to cock a semi-auto pistol in between shots. It is common for CO2 and PCP powered air guns to have this feature.

Full-auto

Holding down the trigger will allow the pistol to continue firing.

The blowback feature doesn’t maximize power

It does look cool to have the slide “blowback”, when you fire an air pistol. The slide does require some air or CO2 to work. My opinion is that I would rather conserve air pressure to get more shots, or add extra pressure behind the projectile than go for something that just looks cool. It’s really just a matter of personal taste.
