.223 vs 5.56: what’s actually different

Had a guy come in last month holding a box of 5.56 ammo and a rifle stamped “.223 Remington” on the barrel, asking if he’d be fine running it through a match this weekend. That question comes up at my counter probably twice a week, so let’s settle it properly, plain and simple.

The short answer is that .223 vs 5.56 isn’t really about the bullet at all. Same diameter, same case dimensions on paper, and if you laid the two rounds side by side you probably couldn’t tell them apart without reading the headstamp. The difference that actually matters is pressure, chamber geometry, and what your rifle was actually built to handle. Get that backwards and you’re not looking at a jam, you’re looking at a rifle that can hurt you.

Why the pressure numbers matter more than the name #

5.56x45mm NATO is loaded to a higher pressure than commercial .223 Remington. SAAMI specs .223 Rem at around 55,000 psi. 5.56 NATO, tested under NATO’s own protocol, runs meaningfully hotter, and military-spec ammo is loaded to take advantage of that. It’s not a huge gap in absolute terms, but it’s enough that firing 5.56 in a chamber cut tight for .223 can spike pressures past what that chamber and barrel steel were designed around.

The reverse direction is a non-issue. .223 Remington ammo fired in a rifle chambered for 5.56 NATO runs fine, no drama, that’s the safe pairing. It’s the other way — 5.56 into a true .223 chamber — where you can get into trouble. A lot of budget bolt guns and some older AR builds are cut with the tighter .223 chamber dimensions, and that’s exactly where this bites people.

The chamber cut is the part nobody looks at #

Here’s the thing that actually separates the two in a rifle you’re holding: the leade, which is the throat area just ahead of the chamber where the bullet transitions into the rifling. A 5.56 NATO chamber has a longer, more generous leade cut specifically to handle the pressure and the slightly different bullet seating you get with mil-spec ammo. A SAAMI .223 Remington chamber has a shorter, tighter leade.

Run 5.56 ammo through that tighter .223 throat and pressure climbs further because the bullet’s got less room to get moving before it engages the rifling hard. Combine that with 5.56’s already-higher pressure loading and you’ve stacked two problems on top of each other. Most of the time nothing dramatic happens and the round just fires a little hot. But “most of the time” isn’t a standard I’d sell a customer on, and it’s not one I’d bet my own hands on either.

How to actually check what you’ve got #

Look at the barrel. Most manufacturers stamp the chambering right on it, near the receiver, something like “.223 Rem”, “5.56 NATO”, or increasingly common these days, “.223 Wylde.” That last one is worth knowing. The Wylde chamber, designed by Bill Wylde, splits the difference: it’s cut to safely run both 5.56 NATO pressures and it tends to shoot .223 match ammo more accurately than a true mil-spec chamber does. If you’re building or buying new and want to run both without thinking twice, that’s the chamber I point people toward.

If the barrel isn’t stamped clearly, or you bought the rifle used and the history’s fuzzy, call the manufacturer with the serial number before you assume anything. A five-minute phone call beats guessing. I’ve had customers roll their eyes at that advice and I get it, but it’s the same advice I’d give my own brother.

Where this actually shows up at the range and in the field #

Most factory AR-15s sold in the last fifteen years are chambered 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde, so if you’re running a modern AR you’re probably fine running either type of ammo through it, and this whole conversation is mostly academic. Where it actually bites people is bolt-action varmint rifles and older or budget AR uppers explicitly marked .223 Remington. Those tighter-chambered guns are usually built for paper-punching accuracy at the expense of pressure headroom, and that’s a reasonable design tradeoff as long as the owner knows what ammo belongs in it.

I had a customer two winters back bring in a Savage bolt gun, .223 Rem stamped plain as day, loaded up with a case of surplus 5.56 he got a smoking deal on. Nothing catastrophic happened in the ten rounds he’d fired before he asked me about it, but I wasn’t going to tell him to keep going. We swapped that case out for actual .223 ammo and sent the 5.56 home with him for a different rifle he owned that was NATO-stamped. No shortcuts on safety, even when the guy’s already put rounds downrange without issue.

Where the confusion actually costs people money #

The other place I see this trip people up is at the reloading bench, not just at the ammo shelf. Reloaders sometimes assume .223 and 5.56 brass are interchangeable in every respect, and dimensionally they mostly are, but 5.56 brass tends to have thicker case walls to handle the higher pressure, which means slightly less internal case capacity. If you’re loading 5.56 brass with data worked up for .223 Remington, you can end up running pressures higher than your load data intended. That’s a whole separate rabbit hole from chamber dimensions, and one that’s caught more than a few reloaders off guard.

What I’d actually tell you to buy #

If you’re shopping new and there’s any chance you’ll want to shoot cheaper surplus or mixed ammo down the road, get a rifle chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde. It costs you basically nothing in accuracy for most shooters and it removes the whole question permanently. If you already own a rifle stamped .223 Remington specifically, stick to ammo boxes that say .223 Remington, plain and simple, and don’t let a good price on 5.56 talk you out of that.

The one opinion I’ll actually stand behind #

Honestly, I think the ammo industry doesn’t do enough to make this distinction obvious on the shelf. Boxes sit side by side, same bullet weights, similar price points, and the only real signal is small print most people don’t read closely at a busy counter on a Saturday. NSSF publishes solid consumer material on ammunition basics, and SAAMI’s own technical library lays out the pressure specs in detail if you want the actual numbers rather than my paraphrase of them — worth a look if you’re the type who wants to see it in writing rather than take a gun store clerk’s word for it. I’d rather a customer read the fine print themselves than trust me blindly, even though trusting me blindly would be a lot faster for both of us.

The bottom line I give at the counter #

.223 Remington ammo is safe in any rifle chambered for .223 Rem, 5.56 NATO, or .223 Wylde. 5.56 NATO ammo needs a 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde chamber, not a tight .223 Remington one. Read the barrel stamp before you buy a case of anything, and if it’s not stamped clearly, make the phone call. It takes longer to explain than it does to just check, so there’s really no excuse for skipping it.
