Firearms law in Canada is federal — the Firearms Act and the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program set classification (Non-Restricted / Restricted / Prohibited) and the PAL/RPAL licence. The provincial Chief Firearms Officer (CFO) administers licensing, transfers, ranges and business licences, with only minor provincial policy differences. In addition, Quebec runs its own provincial registry for non-restricted long guns (the Registre des armes à feu du Québec) — residents must register non-restricted firearms with the province as well as holding a federal PAL.
